Things to consider for Maternity

Will we be including Dad and siblings? If so you can coach them on what to expect (kiss belly, hands on belly, listen to belly, etc).

Are there any items from the nursery or home that you would like to incorporate?

Any expectations or concerns?

Do you have an end goal for these portraits?

Clothing:

  • regular outfits or jeans that accentuate the belly
  • Dads button down shirt (open at belly)
  • yoga gear or pajamas
  • partially nude with wrap
  • maternity gown

Location:

  • outdoors for a more organic look
  • in your home for a more lifestyle/documentary look
  • in the studio for a more classic look

Things to consider for Newborn

Are there any items from the nursery or home that you would like to incorporate (teddy, lovey, blanket, etc)?

Will we be including Dad and siblings? If so do you want them to arrive for the first half of the session or the second half.

Any expectations or concerns?

Do you have an end goal for these portraits?

My style is to photograph baby partially nude with diaper covers, wraps or blankets to keep a natural look and feel.

Locations:

  • in your home for a more lifestyle/documentary look
  • in the studio for a more classic look

My studio has various props and clothing options. I also keep the studio warm and toasty and use a noisemaker to help baby sleep. Just off the studio is a family room where you and your family can relax, watch television, or play while I am working with baby.

Preparing for a newborn session:

Feed the baby prior, but as close to the session time as possible. Keep baby awake for 1-2 hours before the session.

Dress baby in clothing that zips or snaps, NO ONSIES.

Bring extra bottles, formula and pacifier.

If breastfeeding avoid gassy foods.

Leave baby in car seat/carrier when arriving.

Schedule circumcisions after session or at least 7 days prior to session to allow healing.

Family should keep clothes solid and simple.

Neutral colors are best to keep attention on baby. If any images will be hung on the wall consider wall/room colors when picking out your outfits.

Consider layers and spare clothes.
